                Hello out there to all of you Nationals seam-heads, Shades of Red and Bristow Beat readers! Yes, I realize it’s mid-January, the Wiz and Caps are in the hearts of their respective seasons and you may think it’s too early for baseball news...Well, WE CAN AGREE TO DISAGREE! There are too many stories to get prepared for once spring training ramps up on Feb. 28^th (just a little over a month away) against the Mets. Today, I’m going to focus on the starting pitching staff, the bullpen, and the bench.

 

               With the acquisition from the Detroit Tigers, the Nationals have one of the best, if not, THE best 4-man rotation in baseball with Stephen Strasburg, Gio Gonzalez,Jordan Zimmermann and Doug Fister. Yet, as we know, you need a 5-man rotation during the season. The candidates for the 5^th spot are, LHP Ross Detwiler(2-7, 4.04 ERA, 71 IP in 2013), RHP Tanner Roark (7-1, 1.51 ERA, 53 IP), RHP Taylor Jordan (9-1, 1.00 ERA, 90 IP in minors) and Nathan Karns (10-6, 3.26 ERA, 1.32 IP in minors). The natural choice here would be Detwiler since he’s a guy that’s proven to win-you ball games and has been in the majors for a few years, but then you look at Roark’s numbers last season and you wonder why there’s even a debate that he isn’t the guy! Two very capable and professional pitchers in the running there and in my opinion, they will be dueling-it-out in spring training for that 5^th spot. Jordan was great in the minors last season, while showing flashes of brilliance during his brief call-up to the big leagues as well. Chances are strong he’ll start the season in AAA though and the same goes for Karns. Both Karns and Jordan could be major league-ready starting pitchers in their own right but this staff is crowded.

 

              Early last season, the Nationals made a huge blunder by only having one lefty in the bullpen and another blunder by his name being Zach Duke(HA!). This offseason, General Manager Mike Rizzo made it a point to go out and acquire a left handed reliever for lefty-on-lefty matchups. He found his guy in Jerry Blevins( 5-0, 3.15 ERA, 60 IP in Oakland). Typically a healthy and well-balanced bullpen has 7 pitchers: a left handed long reliever(Xavier Cedeno or Ross Detwiler), a right handed long reliever(Ross Ohlendorf or Jordan/Karns/Roark), 2 right handed middle relievers(Tyler Clippard and Craig Stammen), a left handed middle reliever(Jerry Blevins), a setup man and a closer (your 2 best short men: Drew Storen and Rafael Soriano). The Nationals seem to have this covered on paper. There will be a little tweaking here and there, some pitchers may perform better or worse than expected…but the bullpen is about matchups and they have more than enough arms to provide many favorable ones. Look for the battle between Detwiler and Roark in spring training to determine who will be one of the long men.

 

 

             The bench for the Nats has basically 2 definite members: OF Nate McLouth and OF Scott Hairston. Infielders Jamie Carroll and Jeff Fontenot, SS/2B Danny Espinosa, 1b/LF Tyler Moore, C Chris Snyder, C Sandy Leon and C Jhonatan Solano all will battle for the 3 remaining bench spots with one of them reserved for a backup catcher. Some think Rizzo is still looking to acquire a veteran backup catcher via free agency or trade but he’s been quoted as saying that he’s “comfortable” with the in-house choices. I personally think Espinosa will be dealt by the start of the season because of his youth and potential as a power-hitting middle infielder that has great defensive capabilities. Also, you look at these bench candidates and you’re not seeing any power from the left-side. This may be another thing Rizzo addresses before the season. I guess we’ll have to wait and see…

Nationals officially name Matt Williams as manager

 

 

     Thursday morning, General Manager Mike Rizzo released what earlier reports suggested, the next manager for the Washington Nationals will be former Arizona Diamondbacks Third Base Coach, Matt Williams.

 Rizzo had a conference call with local reporters today. Here is some of what he had to say about the decision. 

"Matt's performance, first of all his presentation, his communication skills, his knowledge of the ball club, the league, the division, his presence and some of the character traits he possesses were really the difference between he and other very qualified candidates".

Williams and Rizzo go back to 1999 when Rizzo was a scouting director for Arizona and Williams was finishing up his career. Rizzo suggested that Williams wasn't a favorite going into the interview process, which included favorite and current Bench Coach Randy Knorr, Third Base Coach Trent Jewett, Padres front office official Brad Ausmus and Blue Jays Bench Coach DeMarlo Hale. 

"I knew a lot of candidates, and like I said before, they were all terrific interviews and the process went great," said Rizzo.

"It was a very difficult decision, but Matt, we felt, possessed all the characteristics of a successful manager and a guy we think can take us to the next level...We had several internal candidates that were extremely good candidates, we just felt that Matt's message, the way he communicates the message and his demeanor and character was kind of the difference maker, for me."

Shockingly it seems like the coaching staff, for the most part, will stay in tact. Bench Coach Randy Knorr looks to stay put as well as Pitching Coach Steve McCatty. 

"There's not going to be a whole transforming of the coaching staff," Rizzo said. "We're going to try to keep some consistency. But we're not at the point yet where we can announce what the coaching staff consists of."

Shades Of Red

Oh last October...

      While laughing hard at the Braves not putting up any fight and being eliminated in the NLDS by the Dodgers last night then noticing the Tigers and Rays face elimination tonight, of course I can only think of one thing: October 12, 2012.

 

      The night started out beautifully. I slept in that day, waking up with a sense of calm and no need for coffee (which is extremely rare). I showered, put my favorite Nationals gear in the wash, and made calls to see where I will plant my butt for a few hours during the evening. I went over to the parents' house for an early dinner then called Brian to see if he wanted to come out, the answer was yes and then I heard from Zach:

I went home and put my freshly washed gear on and headed to Zach's. I was excited. Beyond excited. My favorite team in my favorite sport was playing in a 2-2 tied series against the St Louis Cardinals. Better than that, I was quite confident we would win. 

       The game started fast. Nationals' hitters plated 6 runs in 2.2 innings and Gio was mowing the Cards down. Then started to hiccup a run here and there before completely falling apart.            I remember just like yesterday. We were up 7-5, top of the Ninth, all we needed was for our great young closer (Drew Storen) to get 3 outs. That's all we needed. All of us were very tense sitting in the room, we noticed Drew's eyes were really big and really bloodshot, so he was obviously nervous. Then before every pitch you could see his glove shaking, basically convulsing in a tremor! That's when it was apparent that he was rattled. Then he gave up 4 runs, we lost 9-7 and had 3 quick outs in the bottom of the 9th to end it. 

       The point in me reminiscing on this day of last year, is not to put myself through more torture (even though us Washington sports fans must enjoy the pain ,being as what we've been through), it's the fact that, on that night, as painful as it was, we were rooting for our team in an elimination game of the playoffs. A theme we will not host in this town in 2013. That sucks more than the game 5 loss.

       Buy hey, at least the Braves lost!
